July 2007 -- Our mini road trip along central Oregon, leading us to Shaniko, Oregon
where I gathered tons of research for a future book.
Oregon's best known ghost town. With it's heydey in the early 20th century, and presently a population of 26, this town is like something straight out of the Old West and strolling about, one can imagine tumbleweeds drifting by as you walk down Main Street. We visited on a Tuesday, not knowing the town is closed on that day and Wendesday. But how fun to have the town to "ourselves" as my man and I wandered here and there learning more about this place that was once known as the "Wool Capital of the World."
Shaniko has antique stores, hotel, and ice cream shop that were not open when we were there....drat! But we did take in the jailhouse, old building with antique automobiles and the general store where I found some neat stuff, paid $12.00 for a 6-pack of Bud-Lite and held an adorable kitten manning the store...
