Remedies used by our ancestors. Be forewarned, though these were used, or told to be used back in the 1800's, they are mostly for amusement so please use at your own risk!

Late 1800's Freckle Cure

Freckles are not easily washed out of those who have a florid complexion and are much in the sunshine, but the following washes are not only harmless, but very much the best of any thing we know.

Grate horseradish fine, let stand a few hours in buttermilk, then strain and use the wash night and morning. Or squeeze the juice of a lemon into a half a goblet of water, and use the same way. Most of the remedies for freckles are poisonous and cannot be with safety. Freckles indicate a defect in digestion, and consist in deposits of the carbonaceons of fatty matter beneath the skin. The diet should be attended to, and should be of a nature that the bowel and kidneys will do their duty.

Daily bathing, with much friction, should not be neglected, and the Turkish bath taken occasionally if convenient.

Option 2:   * and perhaps the most safest freckle cure for 21st century use, not to mention a wonderful facial:

Lemon and Cucumber facial

Cucumber with lemon juice is said to erase freckles and work against wrinkles. This recipe has been updated for modern use (And is WONDERFUL for the complexion. I love this and use it often! Your skin takes on a healthy glow after use. )

2 -inch chunk fresh cucumber, seeded and pureed
1 teaspoon lemon juice
1 teaspoon Witch Hazel *
1 egg white
2 tablespoons cream or plain yogurt (optional; for dry skin)
2 teaspoons nonfat powdered milk (optional; for normal skin)

Briefly puree all ingredients in a blender. Apply to the face, avoiding the area around your eyes, and let sit until nearly dry, about 20 - 30 minutes. Rinse well with warm water. Skin with look and feel refreshed, with a healthy glow.

( *  Witch Hazel is an all-natural astringent and can be purchased at most drugstores.)

Sunburns

Vinegar helps reduce the pain of a sunburn. By applying it to the burnt area with a damp cloth, or adding a couple cupfuls to your bath water and soaking in tub, you shall find much relief.  Cucumbers are also noted in helping to cool the burn by applying slices directly to area.  (A modern day cure is aloe vera and applying it directly to skin. You may use a leaf from an aloe vera plant, or aloe vera in a bottle from your local drugstore. Do not apply moisturizer body lotions to a sunburn, as this only works to trap in heat.)

Removing Suntans

Tanned skin is the indication of a working or poor lady. Delicate ladies shall pride themselves in pale skin and take proper care in shielding themselves from the sun by way of hats or parosels. Years of exposure leads to leathery old saddle effect. To remove a suntan lather skin with honey, as this aides in removing the dark pigment.

Wrinkle Cure

To prevent wrinkles one should drink plenty of water and take proper sleep. During daylight, one shall not expose their face to the sun. To prevent or cure wrinkles, a delicate lady shall take proper care and practice a nightly ritual of lathering her face with cold cream. During the day, slices of cucumbers applied to skin while laying down to take a rest shall aide to cure.

A remedy that still works today! Also, don't forget your sunblock. With today's techology, there's no excuse not to take proper care in preventing wrinkles.

Healthy Hair

One shall take proper care in keeping hair healthy by brushing it 100 strokes on either side each day. Combing the hair when it is wet causes hair to fall from scalp. For those who wish to have more fullness and shine, rising with day-old beer provides strands with what they lack.

Healthy Teeth

Use a mixture of chalk and salt for healthy teeth. ( NOTE: this practice was before 1900, and as we now know, this mixture is damaging to tooth enamel. For modern day healthy teeth, use baking soda, mouthwash and a good toothpaste daily. And visit your dentist every 6 mouths. )

Stomache ache

Peppermint or candy canes are good for curing tummy troubles. For other woes, such as feminine cramps, drinking Camomile tea works real well.

This is still true today! Just don't eat too much, or you could wind up with a toothache.

Ink Stains

While ink stains are yet wet upon the carpet, sponge them with skim milk thoroughly; then wash out the milk with a clean sponge dipped again and again in clean cold water. Exchange this presently for warm, then rub dry with a cloth.

If the stain is upon any article of clothing or table or bed linen, wash well in the milk, afterward in the water. Dry ink stains can be removed from white cloth by oxalix acid.
