Picks from the pod and vine

Canning this year? Try out some of our favorite recipes. Some are old favorites, some
are new ones I'm in love with:

Strawberry Jam -- This is so easy to make, and absolutely yummy! You just may find
yourself eating from the jar. Great to have kids help with.

Pickled Green Beans -- Recently, some galpals and I went to the Lucky Eagle Casino.
While there, we had to-die-for Bloody Mary's. What made it so good you ask, the
pickled green beans. Here is a great recipe I found.

Spring is marching forward. Say good-bye to dull Winter skin, hello bright and fresh with
this lemon and cucumber facial.

Just in time for summer, slow cooked snapped green beans.
A little slice of heaven. The best apple pie recipe this side of The Rockies.

7/12/08 - The Market was fun! Got Walla Walla sweet onions, fresh dill, green beans and garlic. Also picked up a lovely bouquet of lilies, daisies and other beauties and a gallon pot of coneflowers to plant.

Next we hit a nursery. Okay, I'm a sucker for beautiful flowers and I couldn't resist more coneflowers, dahlias and  black-eyed-susans to mingle in on the hill in the side front yard. Sigh. For out back, I got more dahlias, marigolds, and snapdragons. I'm loving the backyard, and sitting out there at sundown with the glow of tiki lights and candles. Can you say paradise! :-) AlI I need now is lites for market umbrella.

I later cooked a pot of snapped green beans. While that simmered, my man and I sipped crantinis on the patio. A refreshing, fabulous summer cocktail! Then bbq'ed chicken breasts and made a Caesar salad. YUM!

Here's a gardening tip my grandma always swore by when gardening. Run your fingernails over a bar of soap so dirt won't get under nails. Worked for her. She always had beautiful nails.

7/10/08 - There's just something magical about fresh summer veggies. Whether you live in the burbs, country, or inbetween, it isn't hard finding them. And -- what better way to welcome summer than by visiting local produce stands, roadside stands, farmer's market, grocery or by planting seeds in your own backyard. Each summer I grow tomatoes, corn, artichokes, garlic and anything else that strikes my fancy. I've also done varieties of herbs, watermelon, pumpkins -- which I've discovered need tons of room for those vines to spread -- and fruits. I like to think I have a fabulous green thumb that I inherited. But it's nothing like what my grandparents could accomplish in their lavish gardens. Theirs were overflowing with every kind of vegetable imaginable. Growing up, my favorites were always vine tomatoes -- ahh, the sweet scent that brings back childhood memories -- green beans, zucchini, acorn squash, cucumbers and radishes. Ooh and those potatoes. Or 'volunteer potatoes' as my grandma always called them, because they always replanted themselves year after year.

Now that I live in the outskirts, I like supporting our local farmers. This weekend, my man and I will be hitting the Vancouver Saturday Market.

Here are some pictures I took today of my artichoke plant and green beans.

4/09/08 - I need your help! I'm looking to try out some new and/or canning and preserves recipes. Got some old tried and true that you love? Send me the recipe, and if we (me, friends and family) love it too, you just may see it here in my Web-site. Please send by April 20, 2008. Thanks!

3/31/08 - Whew! What a busy month March has been. But, I've been making time to do some canning. My mom says when she was growing up, folks always asked my grandma how much she canned each year. Grandma's reply, "A hundred quarts of everything."  My grandma was pretty amazing with everything.

So far this week I've made two dozen half pints of yummy strawberry jam for friends and family, 6
pints of pickled green beans, and 2 pints of marinated mushrooms. I'll be trying out more recipes. I
always love hearing what you're doing in your kitchen.

When you cook, ever wonder how easy we have it compared to cooks in the 1800's? These are recipes, or 'receipts' as they were called back then, from the 1840's to 1890's and many of the recipes contains the actual spelling and slang from that period. Whether you plan to belly up to the bar or use the cookstove, I hope you enjoy! Be forewarned many contain ways of preparing things we now do a safer way, so please use at your own risk!

Please visit again soon, as I am always adding new recipes. Be sure check out my recipe of the month down below. And -- my 'note'  to see what I'm trying out in the kitchen.

Watch out for the rooster. He's a real wild one!
